After impressing with the team’s under-17 squad, Wirtz made his senior professional debut for Leverkusen in the Bundesliga on May 18 beginning in an away game in the Bundesliga against Werder Bremen. Wirtz signed an extension of his contract at the time of his signing on December 23rd 2020, which extended his contract until 2023. On the 19th of January, 2021 Wirtz scored the winning goal during the 80th minute in the Leverkusen’s home win against Borussia Dortmund.
