Biography
Born and raised in Accra, Ghana, Gregory Bortey Promise Newman was immersed in music at a very young age. The “musichead” father inadvertently helped to shape his genre and cross-cultural preferences by exposing him to all kinds of music from reggae R&B to boybands, to Ghanaian highlife. Today, Promise finds himself pulling from and taking in an incredibly diverse range of music, for both his own music as well as during his artistic process. Right now it’s his favorite to feel Ghanaian drill and music from the South African Amapiano scene and work with UK artists such as NSG or Headie One to produce the music he creates.

But in classic child-of-African-parents form, Promise was focused mainly on finishing school and securing a degree up until a few years ago: “Music was never really my plan. I’ve always been a fan of music, but it was more than a hobby.” After stepping into an unplanned recording session, his interest and natural talent were sparked during a session. He began to work on his own style and began writing his own songs and working with producers. In his final year at high school, his headmaster actually heard his singing in class and asked him to take part in the choir of his school for the final term. However, it was when his final year at his degree at university that everything changed for Promise. Following the release of his first album in the year 2017, first through Soundcloud and then later across all streaming services the fan base of Promise increased when word began to spread and buzz spread throughout the local area, and before the family and he was aware the career of his idol had taken off “My parents were superstars in the area before they even knew [what was happening].”

Today, his eyes are set on global dominance, both for him as well as his fellow musicians. “To be honest, I feel like Afrobeats is gonna be the biggest genre in the world in no time,” he declares in a casual manner. It is referred to under different names and styles the rapper mentions everything from Drake’s debut top-selling single One Dance (with Wizkid) to the rapid growth in popularity of Afroswing across Europe or the international fame of artists like Wiz, Burna Boy, and Davido in their own right as proof for his theories Afrobeats is already making waves across the world. This is a goal he’s making sure to realize through his upcoming project.

“Thank God”, his debut single debuted in the year 2016 with Fuse ODG and was produced by Killbeatz. He is an extremely skilled artist and considers himself to be versatile. His musical genres include R’n’B Afrobeats, Highlife, and Hip-hop. Some of his other hit songs are “Selfish”, “CCTV”, and “Oh Yeah” among numerous others.
King Promise is signed to the record label Legacy Life Entertainment which is run by Gervin Ohene Addo. Dj Vision featured King Promise on his album Double Trouble” which topped radio charts for several weeks.
He has won numerous prizes, including the most outstanding male singer for the season during the U.K edition of the Ghana Music Awards and the Hiplife Song of the year at the 3 Music Awards.
