After sustaining an injury during the final year of his high school, Cruz was unable to not qualify for a wrestling scholarship from The University of Northern Colorado. Dominick Cruz Career
2005 was the year that marked the start the professional mix martial art (MMA) career. In 2005, he competed for Rage in the Cage and Total Combat organizations. He was 9-0 prior to signing with World Extreme Cagefighting (WEC).
The first Fight in the WEC was the featherweight title fight with Urijah Faber in WEC 26. He was defeated by a guillotine choke in the first round. This fight marked the beginning of a lengthy rivalry between the two fighters.
On July 7, 2008 in WEC 34. Cruz made his debut in the bantamweight division of 135 pounds beating Charlie Valencia by unanimous decision. Cruz was able to win via decision over Ian McCall on January 25 2009 at WEC 38 in addition to Ivan Lopez on April 5 2009 on April 5, 2009, at WEC 40. Cruz beat Joseph Benavidez unanimously on August 9, 2009 in WEC 42. Both contestants were awarded Fight of the Night honors.

Cruz was given the title fight against the incumbent WEC Bantamweight champion Brian Bowles after a four-fight winning streak. The Fight was held in March 6th, 2010 in WEC 47. Bowles was unable to continue the fight after breaking his hand during the second round. This resulted to Cruz’s TKO victory. Cruz won the WEC Bantamweight Championship.
Cruz has defended his title the first time in his fight against Joseph Benavidez at WEC 50 on August 18 in 2010. Cruz’s left hand broke during the fight. The match was a reprise of Cruz’s left hand that was broken during their Fight at WEC 42, where Cruz handed Benavidez his first loss of his career through a unanimity. Cruz once again defeated Benavidez via a split decision, retaining his title.
On the 14th of December in 2010, on the night of WEC 53 in Las Vegas, Cruz took on Scott Jorgensen for his WEC Bantamweight Championship and the newly established UFC Bantamweight Championship.
It would be the final Bantamweight Championship fight under the WEC banner, and also the crowning of one of the very first UFC Bantamweight champion which makes it the only UFC title fight that was not in the UFC. Cruz kept his WEC Bantamweight
Championship with a unanimous decision victory over Jorgensen and became the first UFC Bantamweight Champion.
