Andrew Henry Robertson is a professional Scottish footballer. He plays left-back for Premier League side Liverpool and also captains the Scotland national soccer team. Robertson is a left-back who is considered one of the most skilled in the game. He is well-known for his speed, agility, work-rate and ability to tackle.

Robertson started his senior career at Queen’s Park in 2012. He then joined Dundee United one year later. He was named PFA Scotland Young player of the year for his performance in his first season. In July 2014, he joined Hull City for a fee PS2.85million. He then joined Liverpool in July 2017, for an undisclosed amount, which is believed to have been an initial PS8million. In his first two seasons, he was in the UEFA Champions League finals. He lost the first one in 2018, but won the second in 2019. He was awarded the PFA Team Award for his performance in 2018-19 Premier League season. He also won the UEFA Super Cup as well as the FIFA Club World Cup. He was integral in Liverpool’s win of the 2019-20 Premier League.

Robertson made his international debut for Scotland in May 2014. He was then appointed Scotland captain in September 2018. He represented Scotland at UEFA Euro 2020.

Robertson was born in Glasgow, and was a lifelong Celtic fan. His father, Brian, was nicknamed “Pop” and grew up in Maryhill (specifically Wyndford Estate where he was a childhood friend with footballers Jim Duffy, and Charlie Nicholas). He was an avid amateur player but a spinal injury forced him to wear a brace that prevented him from becoming a professional athlete.

From 2006 to 2012, he attended St Ninian’s High School, Giffnock East Renfrewshire. He was the captain of the football team. He was also a player for Giffnock Soccer Centre, and joined Celtic as an under-15 because he was too small. He signed for Queen’s Park.


Queen’s Park

Robertson focused his attention on his studies and was just about to start university at an undergraduate level when he was called up to Queen’s Park’s first team in the 2012-13 season. In a penalty shootout win against Berwick Rangers, he made his debut for the club. He went on to make forty appearances throughout the season to help the club finish third in the Scottish Third Division. On 13 November 2012, he scored his first goal in the club’s 2-1 loss to East Stirlingshire.

Dundee United

Robertson joined Dundee United’s Scottish Premiership side, along with Queen’s Park’s teammate Aidan Connolly on June 3, 2013. He took over the place of Barry Douglas , who had made the same move three year earlier. Queen’s Park, an amateur club, protested against the possibility of Douglas leaving for United without paying a transfer fee. They eventually reached a deal that included a portion of future transfers.

Robertson was immediately part of manager Jackie McNamara’s first team plans. He made his debut for the club in the 0-0 draw against Partick Thistle on the opening day. Robertson scored his debut goal for Dundee United on 22 September 2013 in a 2-2 draw with Motherwell. He ran into his own half and then sent a low left foot drive in to the goal, which he did from 22 yards. He signed a new contract with United shortly thereafter, which he continued to be under until May 2016. He was named SPFL young player and player of month for September 2013, as well as November 2013. Robertson was a participant in the Scottish Cup Semifinal against Rangers at Ibrox on 12 April 2014. United won 3-1. Robertson was named the PFA Scotland Team Of The Year for the 2013-14 Scottish Premiership.

Hull City

Dundee United received a PS2.85 million offer from Hull City, an English Premier League club, for Robertson in July 2014. Robertson signed a three year contract with Hull on 29 July. Stan Ternent from Hull City was Hull City’s chief Scout. He explained that he had been considering Stuart Armstrong but Robertson was the obvious choice. Robertson had a history of Celtic and was always determined, despite his setbacks. He was a natural talent and you could see it immediately.


On the first day of the season, he made his competitive debut in a 1-0 win away to Queens Park Rangers. He also made a goal-line clearance. Robertson settled quickly at Hull, and he was awarded the club’s Player-of-the Month award for August 2014. In his first season at the KC Stadium, he made 24 appearances but could not prevent the team being relegated.

Robertson decided to remain at City despite the release of many other first-teamers. He scored his first goal for City on the 3rd of November 2015 at Brentford. This resulted in Hull’s first Championship win on goal difference. He was a starter in the 2016 Championship playoff Final against Sheffield Wednesday. Hull won the match 1-0 to earn promotion to the Premier League. However, the team was relegated after only one season in the top flight.

Robertson signed a long-term contract with Liverpool on 21 July 2017 for a fee of PS8million. He made his debut on 19 August in a 1-0 victory over Crystal Palace and won the Man of the match award. Robertson was initially an understudy for Alberto Moreno in the 2017-18 season. However, he got a few games after the Spaniard was hurt in December. Liverpool fans were impressed by his performance in the 4-3 win against Manchester City, league leaders on January 14. On the last match day of 2017-18, he scored the club’s first goal against Brighton & Hove Albion. It was a 4-0 win.

Robertson played regularly for Liverpool in 2018-19, when Liverpool finished second in the Premier League. In January 2019, Robertson signed a new contract that will run through 2024. He was hailed the best Premier League left back by Kevin Kilbane, and the best world left back by Phil Neville. Robertson had 11 assists during the 2018-19 Premier League season. He was among the PFA Team Of The Year along with his Liverpool teammates, Trent Alexander–Arnold and Sadio Mane .

Robertson played 90 minutes of the Champions League final, as Liverpool beat Tottenham Hotspur in the final to win their sixth European Cup. He was the first Scot to win this tournament since Darren Fletcher (2008), a substitute that was not used in 2008, and the first player to be in a winning team since Paul Lambert 1997.

Robertson scored his first European goal against Red Bull Salzburg in the European champions’ home game of Champions League 2019. Robertson scored his second Premier League goal in Liverpool’s match against Aston Villa on 2 November 2019. Liverpool won 2-1 in stoppage.

Robertson was the first to be named in the squad of Scotland for a friendly against Poland, 5 March 2014. In the second half, he was substituted by Robertson as Scotland won 1-0 in Warsaw. Manager of Scotland Gordon Strachan stated that Andy came on the pitch and drove 30 yards for the first time. That was amazing. There is no gray area. Manager Alex McLeish appointed Robertson as Scotland’s captain on 3 September 2018. Robertson stated that he and his left-back Kieran Terney were being forced to play out of the position in the 3-5-2 system, which Alex McLeish had adopted in order to accommodate both players.

Robertson scored the first goal in a UEFA Euro 2020 qualifying match against Cyprus on June 8, 2019, with a long-range strike. Scotland won the match 2-1. He was one of five Scotland players who had to leave the national team due to injury in November.

Scotland won 5-4 on penalties against Serbia to qualify for UEFA Euro 2020 in November 2020. Robertson was again the captain. This was Scotland’s first appearance in a major tournament since 1998. It also ended a 22-year-old streak of not qualifying. Robertson was Scotland’s captain in the first Euro 2020 game. Robertson was awarded his 50th cap in September that year and was subsequently included in the Scottish FA International Roll of Honour. He led the team to victory against Austria by leading them to a 1-0 win away. His substitute was Paul McGinn, who had played with Robertson nearly nine years ago when they were playing with Queen’s Park in fourth-tier Scottish football. (He had previously been reunited with another Queen’s Park colleague, Lawrence Shankland in 2019).


Phil Neville, an ex-defender for England, considers Robertson one of the top left-backs worldwide because of his speed, energy and cross ability. Fabio Aurelio was a Liverpool predecessor in the same position. He praised Robertson, saying that “One thing that draws my attention is that [he]’s always improving, not comfortable in his choice being first choice” and that “the two full-backs in Liverpool right now are incredible.” We are capable of competing in any way.

Robertson is a Roman Catholic. Robertson is engaged to Rachel Roberts. Rachel gave birth to their son, Rocco on 26 August 2017. The couple welcomed Aria, their second and first child, in January 2019.

Robertson donated a signed Liverpool shirt from his teammate Roberto Firmino in March 2018 to a young boy who had donated his pocket money to a local Food Bank. The Sunday Times reported that Robertson had given significant amounts to local food banks in the Glasgow region in March 2020.

Robertson’s first book, Robbo – Now You’re Gonna Be Believe Us was published in September 2020. It focuses primarily on Liverpool’s 2019-20 campaign. Robertson’s foundation receives all proceeds from the book, which supports underprivileged children in Scotland.
