Zimbabwe’s Anti-Corruption Agency Arrest Wife of VP Chiwenga Over Money Laundering
Zimbabwean Vice-President Constantino Chiwenga’s estranged wife has been arrested by Zimbabwe’s anti-corruption commission
The 38-year-old Marry Mubaiwa was facing charges of forging the couple’s marriage certificate, money laundering and externalizing over $1 million. The commission also revealed that Mrs. Mubaiwa allegedly moved more than one million dollars out of the country and laundered nearly 920,000 dollars.
Mubaiwa who faces six counts of externalization of funds, five counts of money laundering and one of fraud will likely appear in court on Monday, ZACC spokesman John Makamure said
However, the timing of Mubaiwa’s arrest and probe will likely raise eyebrows after local private media reported two weeks ago that she was going through a divorce with her husband Chiwenga.
The marriage crises for the number two family in zimbabwe Mubaiwa allegedly obtained a marriage certificate illegally without Chiwenga’s consent earlier this year when the vice president was ill. However, Chiwenga returned home last month after spending four months in China receiving medical treatment for a blocked esophagus. He has not been seen with Chiwenga in public, including at the annual ruling party conference that ended on Saturday.
