Insider has a report. The Dobre twins’ YouTube video of Marcus pretending his suicide death as a “prank” received a lot of criticism. The video is titled “MY TWIN BROTH IS DEAD?” The video was uploaded on January 10, and has been viewed more than 2.5 million times. The video shows Lucas reading a note from his twin brother. It says, “Put it on YouTube.” “To my family, Lucas and dad, Cyrus, Darius, Cyrus, Lucas, and all the others I just want to say that I love you guys. Before I leave, I wanted to send you this note. I will miss you so very much, but I am now gone forever. He continues to read the letter, becoming more confused. “Please don’t lose heart for our fans. They really love us and keep us happy. You can always find me in the backyard. Marcus, I will see your in the sky.” After searching the house for Marcus, Lucas calls his phone and asks why Lucas isn’t “freaking it out”. After finding the tombstone, the brothers ponder what it all means before the filming ends. Marcus speaks directly to the camera.
“I’m not dead. I just wanted to prank family.” He said, “I’m so sorry guys.” “I flew to LA to pull this prank. It’s unbelievable that I pulled it off.
There was much disapproval in the comments section. One viewer commented, “This is the worst thing I’ve ever experienced.” “Losing my brother was one of the most difficult things I have ever experienced.” Insider was informed by a representative of SAVE, a suicide prevention charity. He stated that “We lose someone every 40 seconds which means this is not something to joke about, minimize or attempt to make funny.”
Further, the statement stated that pranks concerning suicide could lead to “harm or death” as well as “major trauma” for those who are receiving them. SAVE stated that such pranks could lead to unnecessary emergency calls, which can be costly for the community. SAVE states that “we need to make it clear to everyone that videos and actions like these pranks can be very dangerous and not appropriate.” Social media platforms must continue to promote suicide prevention through social media best practices and stop prank videos from influencing users. YouTube’s community guidelines say that YouTube does not permit content that encourages suicide or self-harm. It also prohibits videos that are intended to shock, disgust or pose a significant risk to users. YouTube’s community guidelines do not provide clear guidance regarding “pranks”. Google, the YouTube owner, has yet to comment.
Insider has yet to receive a response from the brothers. For five years, the four brothers have posted videos to their YouTube channel together. Sometimes, they feature Aurelia Dobre (retired Olympic gymnast).
