Biography

Oluwatobi Wande Ojosipe (born on 18 October 1985) is a Nigerian music legend who is considered to be one of the pioneers of the music industry of Afrobeats. The songwriter and singer are professionally known by the name Wande Coal.

After signing with Mo’Hit Records, He was in the spotlight and recorded his single Ololufe which is among the songs on the compilation album of the label called Curriculum Vitae (CV).

The debut record, Mushin to Mo’Hits established his place in the music industry with hits singles such as Bumper2Bumperand You Bad becoming the top-rated songs of fans.

The second album of his career, Wanted, was released in 2015. while his third album entitled Realms was released in 2020.

Wande Coal has risen to the Hall Of Fame in the African music industry through songs like Ballerz, Turkey Nla, Iskaba, and So Mi So Ashimapeyin My Way, amongst others.

To honor his creative talents, Wande Coal was awarded an award for his creativity, the African artist Of The Year award at the Ghana Music Awards in 2010, and also the artiste Of The Year at the 2010 Hip Hop World Awards.

Early Life

Wande Coal was born on the 18th of October, 1985 in the midst of Lagos Island, in Lagos State. He was born in the Ojosipe family, which includes chief Ibukun Olufunto Ojosipeand the late Mrs. Omolara Oluwayemisi Ojosipe.

He is an indigenous of Lagos State and hails from the Yoruba tribe. After his birth, a few days after his arrival to the world the parents of his birth named him Oluwatobi Wande Ojosipe. The firstborn child of the family also has one younger sibling. His parents are Christians and have raised him with the same religion. He has a sister called Towa Ojosipe.

When he was a teenager, music was a passion with Wande Coal when he realized that he had the most beautiful voice. To enhance his singing He joins the choir of his church. He was just a teenager at the time. The choir he sang in assisted Wande Coal discover more about music and encouraged his passion to create music.

Wande Coal’s breakthrough came when his paths crossed with Don Jazzy and D’banj, the two founders of Mo’Hit Records. The label signed him to the record label in the year 2006.

The label’s co-signers included D’Prince, Kayswitch, Dr. SID as well as Tiwa Savage. The world saw the talent that the young Wande Coal offered when he performed in the D’banj‘s Funk Your Up/Rundown album. The album featured him on singles Why MeLoke along with Tonsibe.

He contributed his voice to the making of the company’s collection album Curriculum Vitae (CV). The first single from the compilation album Ololufe, led to him gaining national recognition in the sense that hundreds of Nigerians were amazed by his voice and songwriting talent.

After months of intense work in the studio, the artist released his debut album to the public realm in the year 2010. The album was titled Mushin 2 Mo’Hits The album was instrumental in helping Wande Coal to become an international musician and brought his more collaborations with well-known and new artists. The album contains the hottest party songs like You Bad featuring D’banj, Bumper2Bumper, and Taboo.

2011 was the year that the artist wowed the hearts of his fans by performing songs like Private Trips, Go Low, and the song Been Long You Saw Me featuring Don Jazzy. As the album he released with Curriculum VitaeWande Coal was a key player in the creation of Mavin Records‘ second compilation album called Solar Plexus. He composed and sang the singles Pretty GirlsForever as well as the single See Me Ri. The album came out in 2012.

In 2012 three co-founders at Mo’Hit Records, D’banj and Don Jazzy had a disagreement that led to the shutting down of the label. Don Jazzy suggested an alternative label called Mavin Records, which Wande Coal has signed up to. D’Prince and Dr. SID have also signed with the label. Soon after, they were added to the roster by Tiwa Savage who was one of the female artists to be signed to the label.

But, Wande Coal has since left Mavin Records in 2013 to pursue his music under his own imprint of music. This led to the creation of Black Diamond Entertainment. The singer paused his music for a couple of years, before returning in the year 2015 with his second album. The album called Wanteddoing was moderately very well on the charts and was given an average score by reviewers.

In 2017 Wande Coal’s career accelerated again when he dropped back-to-back hits like Ballerz, Iskaba featuring DJ Tunez, Oh No No, Funkeh, and Turkey Nla. The artist was able to keep the music industry in awe with the song, So Mi So which was released in 2018.

Through time, he’s developed a strong relationship with a variety of top producers in their field. This list includes Spellz, Juls, Killertunes, CheekyChizzy, Maleek Berry, Sarz, and Don Jazzy.

He also collaborated with other famous music artists such as Wizkid, Olamide, Falz D’banj D’Prince, Patoranking, Shizzi, Phyno, Ikechukwu, R2Bees along with Naeto C.

The music video for the song Come My Way was directed by Sesanand who released it on November 4, 2021.

He was in 2022 when he was included on rapper Olamide‘s popular track, Hate Me that first came out on February 20, 2022. He also contributed his voice to Listen which was among the songs from Basketmouth‘s new album Horoscopes.

Wande Coal received the award for the best R&B/Pop Single at the 10th edition of the Hip Hop World Awards. He was awarded his African Artist Of The Year category at the Ghana Music Awards in 2010.
