Nadine Kessler ( [na’di:n ‘keslaKessler born on April 4, 1988) is a retired German footballer, and currently head of women’s soccer at UEFA. She was a player in the German club VfL Wolfsburg and the German national team. Kessler was awarded the FIFA World Player of the Year award at the 2014 FIFA Ballon d’Or.

EARLY LIFE

Born in Landstuhl, Kessler was raised in the town of Weselberg which is where she attended primary and kindergarten. When she was a teenager she started playing for the boys’ clubs SV Herschberg, SV Hermersberg as well as SC Weselberg. At 16 years old she joined the women’s team 1. FC Saarbrucken in the second division. From 2006 until 2007 she was the team’s top scoring player.

After finishing High School in the year 2007 Kessler began her basic training in the Bundeswehr in the month of October 2007. She was assigned to an organization for sports promotion in the Bundeswehr Sports School in Warendorf and was a Corporal. of Corporal. She was also a student at in the German University for Prevention and Health Management (DHfPG) where she graduated with an undergraduate degree in Health Economics in the year 2012. The year 2014 was the first time she was enrolled for the MBA program at DHfPG.

CLUB CAREER

1. FFC Turbine Potsdam

Kessler joined 1. FFC Turbine Potsdam in the top-division Frauen Bundesliga in 2009 at the age of 21. She assisted in finishing the regular season on very top spot on the league standings with an 19-1-2 record for scoring record scoring. The team was crowned their 2009/10 UEFA Women’s Champions League after beating Olympique Lyonnais in penalty kicks.

VfL Wolfsburg

In the year 2011, Kessler transferred to VfL Wolfsburg. They finished in second place in the regular season of 2011-12 with a 18-2-2 record. Kessler had 11 points,, which is tied for fourth place in the league for the most goals scored.

In the 2012-13 season, Kessler recorded eight points to help Wolfsburg finish in the top spot during the regular season. 17-3-2 record. She was captain of the team that helped take home the 2012-13 UEFA Champions League after defeating Olympique Lyonnais 1-0 in the final.

in 2014, Kessler was the captain of Wolfsburg to victories at the Frauen Bundesliga as well as the UEFA Women’s Champions League. Wolfsburg was the only German team in history to be crowned the treble consisting of League, German Cup and Champions League. Kessler was recognized with an award called the UEFA Best Women’s Player in Europe Award. She was also awarded with the FIFA Players of the Year award in January of this year, having won 17.52 percent of the vote over Marta (14.16 percent) as well as Abby Wambach (13.33 percent). When she was presented with the award, she said “It’s a reward for hard work, good performances and a good development track. I know it’s a trophy for individuals, but I’d never have won it without my teammates.”

She signed her new one-year contract the 12th of May, 2015. She announced her retirement on April 14th, 2016.

INTERNATIONAL CAREER

Kessler played for Germany at the youth level with teams of under-15s, 17 19 as well as 20 team from 2003 until in 2008. Her debut came with the senior national side at the 2010 Algarve Cup on 26 February 2010, in a game against Finland after making her debut in the 46th minute as a substitute to Lena Goessling and scoring her first international goal in the 77th minute.

Kessler was a midfielder in the attacking position for Germany in the 2013 UEFA Women’s Euro helping the team to take home the sixth time in a row the team winning 1-0 against Norway.

  Knee injuries caused Nadine Kessler’s retirement at age 28, however the German midfielder’s incredible tight control, smooth playing style and scoring touch will never be lost in the memory of. “Kessi” coached VfL Wolfsburg to back-to-back Frauen-Bundesliga and UEFA Women’s Champions League titles and played a major role for Germany’s Euros victory, which culminated in her being awarded the 2014 UEFA Best Female Player award and FIFA Women’s World Player of the Awards of the Year. As UEFA’s Head of Women’s Football She came to us to revisit and reflect on the sport she is passionate about.

  SK If you could participate in a similar game again what is it and what would it be?

  NK Two games that spring to the mind. The first one is 2014. The 2014. Champions League final in Lisbon and we (Wolfsburg) beat 4-3 Tyreso FF. Tyreso was 2-0 ahead in one minute of play, but we returned after the break. It makes me feel very satisfied and happy for being a part of the team. It’s not all about winning the prize, but most importantly, how you have managed to accomplish all the things you’ve ever wanted to achieve in your life, and who you share it with.

  The next occasion is the final match of the 2013 UEFA Women’s EURO. We defeated Norway 1-1 in front of more than 41,000 people. It was a fantastic atmosphere, and the fact that the majority of people at the stadium weren’t cheering us on probably helped to keep us to keep going. The game was intense , and the goal keeper Nadine Angerer was able to save two penalties. It’s a feeling of immense satisfaction when you have won an important prize for your nation. I was exhausted, thrilled and didn’t know what had happened however, when we arrived back to Germany thousands of people were waiting to welcome us, and that’s when that you appreciate what you’ve done. My family members were also there and the emotion was overwhelming. It was probably the most proud moment in my career.
