Lina Magull began her career with Horder SC in 1999 until 2002. She then spent the following six years at Hombrucher SV where she played in an all-boys team. After 2008, the player relocated to the boarding school as part of her new position at Girls’ Boarding school run by the Football and Athletics Association of Westfalia in the SuS Kaiserau’s junior group C (boys).

Career advancement

The following year, she began her career as a senior player with the second division club FSV Gutersloh, and was instrumental in helping them climb the ladder up to Bundesliga. In the 2012/13 season, Magull signed the contract to join VfL Wolfsburg. She made her debut in the Frauenbundesliga on the 23rd of September 2012, during the harrowing 6-0 loss in the match against VfL Sindelfingen. Four hours later she was able to make her Champions League debut in VfL Wolfsburg’s away victory of 5-1 against Unia Raciborz. Polish Club Unia Raciborz. On the 14th of November, 2012 Magull got her debut league score with VfL Wolfsburg against her former club Gutersloh in a match that concluded with a 10-0 win to Wolfsburg. Magull won the 2012-13 treble along with Wolfsburg. On the 12th of November, 2014 Magull scored two goals in a game against SV Neulengbach to help Wolfsburg get to the quarter-finals of 2014-15’s UEFA Women’s Champions League.

On the 21st of May, 2015, she signed a new contract with Wolfsburg that will keep her with this German club until the end of 2018. Additionally she was granted a loan to the Bundesliga club SC Freiburg so that she has more opportunities to further develop her career. In May of 2016 her loan to SC Freiburg was extended for another year, until 2017.

INTERNATIONAL CAREER

Lina Magull was selected to represent the junior teams of the German Football Association since 2008. In the years 2010 and 2011 she was a participant at her first UEFA Women’s Under-17 Championship and came in third place and fourth place, respectively. She was part of the German team that played during the 2012 FIFA U-20 Women’s World Cup in Japan. In the second group match with Ghana, Magull scored the sole winning goal at the late in the second half. This helped Germany get into the quarterfinal. Germany ultimately made it to the final, but lost 1-0 against the United States. The year before, she took part for the UEFA Women’s Under-19 Championship in Wales and made it to the semi-finals. However, her Germany were defeated 2-1 by France. For her third FIFA U-20 Women’s World Cup in Canada, Germany, under Magull’s captaincy became the winners after an 1-0 win after extra time over Nigeria.

On the 13th October of 2015. Magull (along along with Mandy Islacker) was selected in on the Germany seniors for the very first time as preparation for two UEFA Women’s Euro 2017 qualifiers against Russia and Turkey. In the 2019 Women’s World Cup, she scored a goal for Germany in their 4-1 win against South Africa. She scored Germany’s only goal in their quarterfinal 2-1 loss to Sweden.

Everything Bayern Munich midfielder Lina Magull has accomplished throughout her career has been winning, but she has not lost her drive to keep pushing to be even better. She is only 27, but Magull radiates confidence and leadership every time she steps onto the field than anything else, she was an absolute delight and a joy to talk to.

Magull recently had a chat with BFW to discuss her career and made a lasting impression on us with her explanation of the changes she’s made as a player throughout her long and successful career.

In the course of her team’s visit to Louisville to compete in The Women’s Cup, Magull was asked to throw the first pitch in the Louisville Bats minor league baseball game. Even though she’d never played prior to this, Magull approached the endeavor with the greatest attitude – as well as having a bit laughter when the discussion was turned to what could go be wrong with throwing an initial pitch.

“Yeah, maybe I’ll get more followers on Instagram with a funny video,” Magull stated with a smile.

It is this kind of attitude that has served her well throughout her professional career. Magull enjoyed very successful spells in the clubs of FSV Gutersloh 2009, Wolfsburg and SC Freiburg before moving to Bayern Munich. Each time she has played, Magull has watched her game improve and develop to improve her game.

The main motivator for Magull was the fact that, as a player in her early years, she was never considered an essential part of any team. The feeling of not being valued was what drove Magull to be more determined and to work harder at making improvements to her game.

“I am more confident as a result of the fact that at a early age, I was not so important in the team as I had hoped. As being the team captain at Bayern Munich, it’s just amazing for me to observe how I’ve changed as a person.” Magull said. Magull. “I believe that my soccer abilities are becoming more and more efficient. The same is true for my health. It’s normal to have injuries during the season and it’s what can make you feel a more old. I made an effort to pay my attention to my health. I’m very proud of myself of myself today. It’s so exciting to be able to make my passion my career. This is all I ever dreamed of and I’m so happy.”

Despite that sense of satisfaction and all the things she has achieved throughout her professional career ( Champions League winner, Bundesliga winner, DFB-Pokal winner, FIFA World Cup U-20 winner), Magull has never been able to slow down. She continues to strive for excellence , and since she has experienced what it takes to be successful at the top levels, she has the ability to see quickly that the Bayern Munich squad could be exceptional.
