Early Life

Julie Beth Johnston was born April 6, 1992 in Mesa, Arizona to Kristi Johnston and David Johnston. She was introduced to soccer by the American Youth Soccer Organization. In 2000-04, she played for the Arizona Arsenal Soccer Club.

She switched to Sereno Soccer Club, Phoenix in 2004, where Melanie, her older sister, also played. She represented the club’s U13 and U19 teams up until 2010. She was also the team’s captain, winning the state title nine times.

She attended Dobson High School in Mesa from 2006 to 2010. In 2010, she was a member the National Honor Society. She was a volunteer athletic trainer and not a player on the school’s soccer team.

Youth Career

Julie Ertz joined Santa Clara University to study communications. She began playing for the Broncos women’s soccer team as a midfielder and received five assists in 2010.

She was named the “WCC Freshman Of The Year” and was included in the NSCAA All West Region Second-Team and Soccer America All Freshman First-Team.

She played in all 21 games her sophomore year. She scored nine goals, including four goal-winning ones. Four assists were also recorded. She was a semi-finalist in the ‘MAC Hermann Trophy’ that year and was selected for both the All-American and All-WCC First-Team NSCAA First-Teams.

She was a junior and led the team with eight goals. Her second-highest assists included three game-winning goals in the NCAA Women’s Soccer Tournament. She was again a semi-finalist in the ‘MAC Hermann Trophy’ and was named U.S. Soccer Young Female Athlete of the Year’ that year. Soccer Young Female Athlete Of The Year.

Club Career

The Chicago Red Stars selected Julie Ertz as the third overall pick in the first round 2014 NWSL College Draft. She scored her only goal on April 19. She was named the ‘NWSL rookie of the year’ at the end of the season with two goals from 21 games. However, her team failed to make the playoffs and placed fifth with a record of 9-8-8.

Although she missed much of 2015 as a national team representative, she made 11 appearances on the team’s behalf and helped the Red Stars to finish second in their league. Despite not being able to save the team’s disastrous 0-3 defeat against FC Kansas City in playoffs, she was named to the NWSL Best XI.

Due to national commitments, she missed a lot of 2016’s season and was unable to score despite having made 13 appearances. She was promoted to attacking midfield and helped the team reach the semifinals of the championship.

After sustaining a knee injury in the third edition, she was unable to make her 2018 season debut. However, she helped Chicago reach the playoffs for the fourth time. They lost in the semifinals for the fourth time. However, she was still able to secure a spot in NWSL Second XI.

She played in 16 of the 16 games during the season and was a key part in taking the team to the NWSL Championship. The team lost to North Carolina Courage in the final.

International Career

Julie Ertz was the US’s national team captain and won the 2012 CONCACAF Under-20 Women’s Championship in Mexico, as well as the 2012 FIFA U-20 Women’s World Cup Japan. She also won the Bronze Ball. She was a member of the U23 team and helped win the Four Nations Tournament in La Manga (Spain) in March 2013.

On February 9, 2013, she made her senior team debut as an 83rd-minute substitute against Scotland in a 4-1 victory. Due to an injury in the last minute, she was able to make it onto the roster for CONCACAF Women’s Championship 2014. She also helped the team qualify to the 2015 FIFA Women’s World Cup.

She played in three matches at the 2015 Algarve Cup, and she scored her first international goal against France in the final. After their 5-2 win, she was a part of all matches at the 2015 FIFA Women’s World Cup.

She was a participant at the 2016 CONCACAF Women’s Olympic Qualifying Tournament, where her team beat Canada 2-0. This qualified her for the 2016 Olympic Games in Rio de Janeiro.

Jill Ellis, her coach, moved her from defensive center to center in the early 2017 season. She was a star at this position and won the U.S. Soccer Female Player of Year award. Soccer Female Player of Year honor.

She helped the US win their fourth title in France at the World Cup in 2019 with her second appearance. Again, she was named Soccer Female Player of Year.

Family & Personal

Julie Ertz met Zach Ertz, Philadelphia Eagles’ tight end, in 2012 at Klein Field, Stanford University’s baseball stadium, during a Stanford game. They were engaged in the same spot in February 2016, and they got married off the coast of Santa Barbara (California) on March 26, 2017.

In 2017, Julie and Zach Ertz were naked for ESPN’s “The Magazine’s Body Issue”. In 2018, the Ertz Family Foundation was established by the couple to “use their success in athletics to improve the world.”

Trivia

Julie Ertz and her national team featured in ‘FIFA 16’. This was the first EA Sports video game to feature women players.
