Sodiq Abubakar Yusuf (born May 6 in 1985) is one of Nigeria’s most prominent indigenous rappers and songwriters.

He is well-known by the name CDQ CDQand for his singing in his native dialect, Yoruba.

The singer came into the spotlight after he released his first single “Nowo E Soke with Wizkid.

Following that, he joined forces in a collaboration with Masterkraft along with Olamide to release the smash song, Indomie.

The song was instrumental in helping CDQ get an award during the 2015 Nigeria Music Video Awards.

He is the owner of an indie label called No Battle No Success Entertainment.

Early Life

CDQ spent his childhood in Orile before relocating to Ilorin to pursue an education in high school. After completing secondary school with good marks He returned home to Lagos State.

He was accepted into his school, Lagos State University, and was able to graduate after four years of study with an education in Economics.

CDQ started to take an interest in music at high school and was primarily focusing on the rap genre. Initially, he was experimenting with English rap, but over time, he moved to indigenous rap that he rapped in his native spoken language of Yoruba.

Career

In 2008 at the age of 23 years old, CDQ started creating music professionally. He was a backup singer for Dagrin for a while before beginning to rap in English along with M.I Abaga.

The situation took a turn for the better for the CDQ in the month of December 2012 when CDQ was able to win the rap battle at Weekly Industry Nite. This led to success in the form of the Masterkraft label offering the artist a recording deal, which the rapper accepted. This was in 2013.

The year 2014 was when the CDQ became known as a household name across the nation. He released his smash single, Indomiefeaturing vocals from Olamide. To remix the track, he teamed up with Afrobeats ‘ singer Davido. The song was composed by the master producer, Masterkraft.

He had another commercial hit with the hit song “Nowo E Soke” with Wizkid. The track was the lead single from the album he released, The Quality. The track, which was awarded Best Afro Hip-Hop Video at the 2016 Nigeria Music Video Awards, was directed and shot by Unlimited L.A. The album he released his debut album in the year 2015.

After the expiration date of his deal with the company of General Records, the singer-songwriter started his own label N.S.N.S ( No Struggle, No Success Entertainment) which was launched on November 11, 2016. The first single released under the label’s name is titled Sai Baba.

Some of the best songs on CDQ’s debut album Quality include Woos Wobi, Oobi, Salaro, Talosobe, First Come First Serve, and Make We Run.

The year 2018 was the time he released the top charting songs: Warey Yo, Gbayi, Shey Normal, Flex, Aye, and Onye Eze. The second album of his studio entitled Ibile Mugabe was released in 2019.

He collaborated together with Wande Coal to bring out the latest track, Kogbedein 2021.

He was nominated for two awards during the 2014 Nigerian Entertainment Awards. CDQ also won the nomination for the award for the best street-hop artist during the 2015 Headies Awards.
