Caitlin Foord

As of the year 2011, Foord received the in the 2011 FIFA Women’s World Cup Best Women’s Young Player. Asian Women’s Young Footballer of the Year, and also Football Federation Australia’s U20 Female Soccerer of the Year. She was named Asian Women’s Soccerer of the Year by the Asian Football Confederation (AFC).

Childhood and early life

She was raised with the twins Jamie through their maternal grandmother Simone in Shellharbour the suburb that is 100 kilometers south of Sydney located in Sydney’s Illawarra Region in New South Wales, Foord was a student at Illawarra Sports High School. Her mother often drove Foord three to four hours round trip to Sydney for games and training: “She’d pick me up immediately after school and drive myself up to Sydney Olympic Park as well as return four times per week for training and on weekends to play.” Her sister Jamie suggested to their mother that she allow Caitlin play football after watching her playing on the playground at school with the boys. “She was playing numerous activities. We went to her and she signed up for The Warilla Wanderers … I believe that in the initial game, she had scored 6 goals.” Foord is the one one of her family who played football.

Foord was a player for the locally-based teams Illawarra Stingrays and the Sutherland Sharks prior to spending time with the New South Wales Institute of Sport. The year 2009 was the time she won the title of Junior Sports Star of the Year at the Shellharbour Sports Awards. In addition, she played in the futsal team and she was part of an NSW under 13 squad which participated at the Australian Championships in Canberra. When she was 13, she won the first time to play for the Australian under-17 national team.

Foord has been a fan of his favorite sport, the National Rugby League (NRL).

Club careers

Central Coast Mariners, 2009

At 16 years old, Foord signed with Central Coast Mariners prior to 2009. W-League season however, he did not participate in a game for the club.

Sydney FC, 2010-14

Following news that Central Coast Mariners would not have a women’s squad during the 2010-11 W-League season, Foord, along with other fellow Mariners teammates Teresa Polias, Lydia Vandenbergh as well as Renee Rollason, all switched to the nearby club Sydney FC. Foord played for four seasons playing for Sydney FC, she appeared in 44 games and scored 10 goals.

Foord got her goal in her debut for Sydney FC during a 4-1 victory over Adelaide United on 20 November 2010. This was her sole goal in the season 2010-11. She started in the 10 games she participated in. Sydney placed as the top player in league, with an 8-2-0.

In the 2011-12 W-League campaign, Foord was in the starting line-up in just five out of 11 matches she played in and scored two goals. On November 12 Foord scored her first goal during an 4-1 win over Newcastle Jets pouncing on an off-side back pass by the Jets defense before slamming the ball into the goal. Sydney FC finished third during the regular season, with 5-3 record.

Returned back to Sydney during this 2012-13 W-League campaign, Foord had three goals scored in the course of 11 games. When she played with Melbourne Victory on 8 December she scored the opening goal of the match at the end of the five minute. Sydney placed fourth in the regular season, with a record of 6-4-2. After beating Brisbane Roar 3-2 in the semi-finals, Foord helped Sydney FC win the title following the 3-1 Grand Final victory over Melbourne Victory.

In 2013, the W-League year, Foord scored four goals in 11 games with Sydney FC. After missing a lot of the first season’s matches because of a foot injury Foord scored a hat-trick during a game against Perth Glory in an 8-2 victory on January 5. Sydney FC finished in second in the regular season with an 8-2-2 record. They were eliminated from the semi-finals after the 2-1 loss to Canberra United.

Sky Blue FC, 2013-15

In March 2013 it was revealed that Foord had signed with the American soccer team Sky Blue FC, for the first year of the National Women’s Soccer League (NWSL). In 2013, she played in 15 games, assisting Sky Blue to their only playoff appearance in the club’s history. She was selected for in the 2013 NWSL 2nd XI Team.

Foord was back with Sky Blue for the 2014 NWSL Season and was in the starting lineup for 20 of her 21 games. Sky Blue finished the season in sixth position.

In February of 2015 Foord resigned to go back in Sky Blue alongside fellow Matildas teammate Samantha Kerr. Because of being part of the 2014 FIFA Women’s World Cup, Foord did not join Sky Blue until July. Foord played during the last 10 matches of 2015’s NWSL season. The team finished in eighth with a record of 5-8-7.

After being named on Sky Blue’s roster for preseason to play in 2016’s NWSL Season, Foord did not train in the preseason and didn’t play for Sky Blue during the 2016 season. In December 2016 , it was revealed that Foord did not participate with the NWSL in 2017, since she had signed with an organization in Japan. There were reports later about the poor long-term conditions for players regards to housing as well as travel and training facilities.

Credit for Perth Glory, 2014-16

On August 14, 2014, Foord agreed to a single-year contract for his participation in Perth Glory for the 2014 W-League season. In his 12 games in Perth, Foord scored 5 goals.

Foord was signed by Perth during in the 2016-2015 W-League season. On January 2, 2016, Foord was injured by a fractured collar bone, which required surgery. The injury rendered her ineligible for the rest period of season.

Return to Sydney FC, 2016-17

On the 13th of September, 2016 Sydney FC announced that Foord was signed by the club. Foord would return to the club that she previously had a four-year stint. In 10 games for Sydney in this 2016-17 W-League season she played for 766 minutes, scoring 2 goals.

Vegalta Sendai Ladies, 2017

In January 2017 the Japan Women’s Soccer League team Vegalta Sendai Ladies announced that they had signed Foord for a one-year contract. Foord scored four goals in 17 games for the club , and admitted to having a difficult time making the transition to the demanding Japanese program of training.

Return to Sydney FC, 2017-20

On the 15th December 2017 after her season ended with Japan, Foord returned to Sydney FC and re-signed for the 2017-18 W-League season. Foord scored three goals in six games and was instrumental in helping Sydney FC qualify for the playoffs. In the semi-final against Newcastle Jets, Foord ruptured her Lisfranc ligament that required surgery. The injury could force her to be out of her 2018 Grand Final against Melbourne City. Melbourne came out on top by 2-0.

For the 2017-19 W-League campaign, Foord scored her second career W-League three-goal hat-trick on December 9 2018 in the match against her team, the Brisbane Roar. She scored three goals to help Sydney to win 5-1 which ended their losing streak of three games.

Foord was briefly back in Sydney during the 2019-20 W-League season, scoring two goals in nine appearances before departing early to pursue the possibility of joining Arsenal in January 2020.

Portland Thorns, 2018-19

On the 11th of January, the rights of Foord in the NWSL were sold between Sky Blue to Seattle Reign FC in exchange for Katie Johnson and Rebekah Stott. Her rights were then sold to Portland Thorns FC along with an 2020 NWSL 2nd Round draft selection as a trade to US world-class midfielder Allie Long. The problem was that Foord had been playing for the W-League at the time, and was injured to her foot during the semi-final, which required surgery. In the end she wasn’t able to make her debut with the Thorns until August 6, 2018. On April 14, 2019 Foord got her goal of the season for Portland in a 2-0 victory over Orlando Pride.

On the 8th of January, 2020 Foord’s NWSL rights were sold to Orlando Pride together as Emily Sonnett and two draft picks in exchange of Orlando’s No. 1 overall pick at the time of 2020’s NWSL College Draft

International career

Foord has been a part of Australia as a senior player for the Australian national side, as in Australia’s under-17 as well as under-16 team. In Foord’s Australian Under-16 National Team Foord played a key role in helping the team get into the AFC U17 Women’s Championship undefeated when she scored a hat-trick an encounter in the Philippines. Foord began her career with Foord’s Australia national team as the Matildas on May 12, 2011, in a friendly game against New Zealand in Gosford. Foord scored a goal during her debut as Australia defeated New Zealand 3-0.

In 2015, Foord was picked for the 2nd World Cup squad, this time as forward. In 2015’s World Cup, Foord played every minute of the five matches played by Australia during which they Matildas lost in the quarterfinals by AFC competitor, Japan.

Foord participated at her debut Olympics in the year 2016. She scored one goal in Australia’s draw 2-2 against Germany during the stage of group play. Australia lost in the quarterfinals by Brazil through penalties.

In May, Foord was named to her third World Cup Team. In this year’s World Cup, Foord played in all four games. Foord scored one goal during the group stage of the tournament against Brazil aiding Australia overcame a deficit of 2-0 to prevail 3-2.Australia lost to Norway at the end of the 16th round.
